POSITION

As a BIM specialist, you will develop, implement, and champion BIM standards, assets, and workflows throughout all project phases. In collaboration with internal team members and external project consultants, the BIM specialist creates, manages, and coordinates high-quality 2D/3D landscape models and construction drawing packages aligned with design intent, technical requirements, and quality standards. The specialist plays a key role in fostering a culture of innovation by driving technological advancement, digital delivery, and production strategy across platforms and projects.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Guide firm-wide adoption, integration, and execution of BIM project delivery by:

 

Demonstrating

·         Advantages of adopting BIM project delivery to more fully communicate design intent, inform design decisions, streamline documentation, and leverage data to automate calculations, schedules, and takeoffs

·         Landscape specific BIM standards, templates, assets, and workflows throughout all project phases

 

Creating

·         Curated content libraries, custom digital assets, and information-rich tools and databases that enhance and streamline landscape documentation  

·         Refined workflows for efficiently and accurately modeling terrain, grading, hardscape, planting, and stormwater systems

·         High-quality, information-rich 2D/3D construction drawing packages and landscape models aligned with design intent, technical requirements, and quality standards

 

Facilitating

·         Onboarding new team members in BIM best practices, workflows, and tools

·         Effective digital coordination, data management, and model updates throughout the project lifecycle

·         Successful data conversion, data exchange, and model interoperability across platforms

 

Collaborating

·         With internal and external team members to develop and implement BIM execution plans and model-sharing strategies

·         With design teams to integrate design intent into BIM models, leverage model data to inform design decisions, and explore other digital innovations to improve design outcomes

·         With multidisciplinary project teams to translate design concepts into well-coordinated, technically accurate documentation packages

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Degree in Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Architecture, Design Technology, or related field

 

Experience

·         3+ years of BIM-focused project delivery experience in the AEC industry

·         Demonstrable real-world experience performing responsibilities outlined above

·         Expertise in Vectorworks preferred

CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY:  
Incumbents in this classification are responsible for leading both the strategic planning and the physical development of parks across the city. This position is responsible for park system master planning, community engagement, capital project execution, and coordination with consultants, contractors, funders, and stakeholders. The manager will guide long-term visioning while also delivering specific park projects — from design through construction — ensuring alignment with community needs, sustainability goals, and fiscal responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Lead development of park master plans, needs assessments, and open space strategies.

Oversee planning and delivery of capital improvement projects — including budgets, timelines, design, and construction.

Directly design small- and medium-scale parks and park enhancements; manage consultant teams for larger projects.

Coordinate with public agencies, nonprofits, foundations, and community groups to shape and fund projects.

Ensure community engagement and equitable planning practices.

Develop grant proposals and manage awarded funds.

Monitor and report on project progress, metrics, and outcomes.

Supervises design team staff to include prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a healthy and safe working environment and making hiring, termination and disciplinary recommendations.

Directs and monitors the day-to-day activities and operations which includes maintaining, administering and implementing of standard operating procedures, quality assurance standards, policies, goals, objectives, work plans and workflow; ensuring procedures and equipment meet operational and program performance and ensuring compliance with applicable laws, ordinances, codes, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.

Directs, reviews and participates in the development of a variety of reports, work papers, communications, schedules and/or other related documents to and from internal departments, governmental entities, external agencies, contractors and/or other interested parties. Compiles and monitors operational, administrative and statistical data related to design center operations and regulatory requirements; prepares related reports, procedures and documentation.

Provides technical expertise and guidance to contractors, ensuring compliance with applicable contract terms and conditions and authorizing contractor payments.

Represents the City and/or the Department at a variety of internal and/or external meetings, public events, training sessions, on committees and/or other related events in order to receive and/or convey information.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Urban Planning, Engineering or related field with Master's level coursework in a related field; supplemented by five (5) years experience that includes architecture, urban design, urban planning, transportation planning, budget administration, supervision and personal computer operations, or any combination of equivalent experience and education.

RaganSmith - Chattanooga - Land Planner / Urban Designer

Description

Ragan Smith is seeking a full-time Land Planner / Urban Designer to join our Landscape Architecture and Land Planning Studio based in our Chattanooga office. The ideal candidate is creative, collaborative, and has a passion for creating places that are authentic, innovative, and functional. This position will have an opportunity to work on a broad range of projects with a focus on public sector work, planning, and design including community comprehensive plans, parks and recreation planning and design, community mobility and alternative transportation plans, streetscape and urban design, green infrastructure, civic center, and downtown master planning. The Land Planner will have access to professionals of various backgrounds and expertise across our multi-disciplinary firm. 

RaganSmith is looking to grow our flourishing community planning and urban design practice with a proven contributor. This position will have the opportunity to work with experienced AICP planners, registered LAs and Civil Engineers but should have a demonstrated record of success in developing plans, projects, and policy documents for community-based projects. The selected candidate will also demonstrate a passion and aptitude for planning and designing the public realm, engaging community members in the design process, and translating community input into functional plans, policy, and designs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support senior planners and/or project managers in producing master planning documents for federal projects

  • Support project team in data collection and data analysis

  • Preparation of plans and maps, GIS production, report graphics production, and workshop meeting documentation

  • Support project teams and sometimes lead client workshops

  • Establish and maintain a project framework, budget, and schedule

  • Review and edit planning and design documents throughout a project lifecycle

  • Assist department leads in preparing proposals and assigning project teams

  • Additional related duties as assigned

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to efficiently read, comprehend, and interpret a variety of community plans, resource documents, and data sources (including GIS data)

  • Comfortable facilitating small group discussions and building consensus

  • Possess a functional understanding of comprehensive planning and policy documents, zoning and development codes, entitlement process, and transportation plans 

  • Manage and mentor a team to meet project goals and deadlines

  • Perform and manage the design of projects in ArcGIS Pro, Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, and MS Office platforms

  • Coordinate and lead meetings with clients, design professionals, reviewing agencies, state agencies, development districts, and nonprofit agencies

  • Help lead and document community engagement and public input

  • AICP certification or ability to obtain

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Environmental Planning & Design, or a related field

  • 4-8+ years of experience in land planning and design

  • Portfolio of previous community related project experience

  • Proficiency with one or more of the following platforms ArcGIS Pro, MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite

  • Adaptability and time management

  • Ability to work independently as well as in multi-disciplinary teams
